Elephants in Brijuni
The situation with elephants in the park and ZOO "BRIJUNI" is deteriorating
every day.
On the fifth day since the activity to save and fight for survival of the elephants
- one of them being heavily injured during hunting - their false buyer (a person
who owns a transport company and is in business of selling elephants), with
approval of the Park and ZOO "Brijuni" Director, is still keeping
the animal in chains in the truck trailer. The elephant cannot even lie down
and is not getting any food or water. Veterinary inspection supported our action
and ordered release of the elephant, but it's "owner", salesman Antun
Gertner does not wish to act in accordance with the Law. Police hasn't responded
yet. The female elephant, separated from the male elephant, is trying to hurt
herself by banging against the iron pillars with her head and refusing to take
food.
Therefore, we decided that during today's (08/08/2000) action we would visit the place and contribute to the release of the elephant by our direct action, as well as stop the destruction of the flora and fauna of the Park and ZOO "Brijuni", it being the part of the national natural treasures.
All NGOs and many citizens of Istria joint our activities and are today organizing signing of the petition "SOS for elephants and remaining animals at the Park and ZOO "Brijuni". Citizens of Osijek can sign the petition from 11 am to 2pm and from 7,30 pm until member of Osijek Green start their trip to Brijuni.
